November 30, 2015 night

Good evening. Currently 27 degrees and partly clear. Did you see that big moon rising from the east about a half hour ago? It was quite pretty. A bit chilly but not that bad. Looks like the mercury will drop a few more degrees this evening then start to warm up the approaching rain. The chances of freezing rain in the morning are decreasing but it’s all a timing thing on how fast the morning warns up.

Went down to the library for a bit then went for my evening walk after stewing over the cost of the replacement thermostat for my apartment which ultimately looks that my renters insurance will cover. But I hate dealing with stupid shit like this.

Got the thermostat fixed in my apartment today and the landlord left a $83 handwritten bill for the replacement. Legally it looks like I’m responsible for it, although the lease language assigning responsibility appears to be not written correctly and says neglect (willful negligence) rather than negligence, which can be a simple accident. The case law is contradictory on bona-fide accidents by tenants and not willful damage but ultimately it’s a moot point – I have renters insurance which covers up to $1,000 damage of property to others (e.g. landlord) with no deductible. I think it’s per year and not per claim. That said, my landlord needs to send me an actual bill and not something scribbled illegibly on a sheet of paper. I’m sure he will make me an actual bill if I ask, because he wants to get paid. I’m sure his insurance for accidental tenant damage only kicks in after the security deposit is used as an deductible. Insurance is a good thing to have. It’s a small claim, so my insurance agent can pay it out on the spot without having an adjuster involved, which is nice. Better yet, the loss occurred on November 30th, so it falls on last year’s insurance, protecting me fully for 2016. If for some unlikely reason the claim isn’t paid, it will buy me time and smooth over my cash flow. I like my apartment and I’m years into my auto-renew at a low rate, so I’d hate to have my lease end in 90 days or the rates hiked. Still a bit annoyed but accidents happen. Still a lot cheaper than a fender bender and certainly a lot less dealing with insurance adjusters and body shops.

Some day I want to own land and be my own landlord in a simple off-grid cabin. I’d be less cheesed off about paying to repair something I owned and broke. I don’t need anything fancy, just a place where I can shoot guns whenever I want, have fires and burn junk, and generally be left alone from an over zealous government. Kind of like Fixed By Doc’s cabin in rural Pennsylvania. I guess for now it’s called camping. It’s nice living in the suburbs and walking or taking the bus everywhere for now. I like Pennsylvania a lot but I have some serious questions about the future of that state, especially recently when both parties in the legislature have been so addicted to raising taxes.

Continued researching winter coats.Β My zipper is broken, missing teeth, and the coat is rattier than what some homeless people wear. Going to get another Carhartt and I found a place with a decent price with no state sales tax or shipping. No sales but they have the colors I like in stock and cheaper than Carhartt direct. The old worn out coat says size 50 which I think is equivalent to 2XL and tall but I really want to try one on for size. I know Crossgates Maul has a Carhartt brand store next to Dick’s, maybe they’ll have that size to try it on. I am seriously bummed out that they aren’t union made anymore.

The Year 2050

As I sit in traffic this evening, the radio is talking about the Paris Climate Talks and the year 2050. I look back at the lit up Empire State Plaza. Something so absurd and surreal about it all.

The year 2050, I will turn age 67. I am planning to retire that year. It won’t be that far away. It’s a bit scary. Every year I max out my Roth IRA because that year won’t be long, as I look back at the Empire Plaza one last time, going home from work.

2050 will come. It’s a certainty.

November 30, 2015 evening

Good evening on this last day of November. Relatively warm this evening at 34 degrees and partly clear. In a while we will see the Waining Crescent Moon although the moon and stars will fade out as the evening progresses and clouds and ultimately rain comes in for the morning. The low will be around 26 degrees.

The morning is when the weather gets interesting. Sunrise is at 7:05 AM tomorrow. Then a slight chance of freezing rain before 9am, then periods of rain. High near 41. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. A lot depends on the timing tomorrow, but except for the morning rush hour, I don’t expect too much besides rain tomorrow.

The weekend still looks pretty nice. Both days are expected to be sunny with highs in the mid-40s. Regular season comes to an end in the north on Sunday and it’s the second to last week in the Southern Zone. The Adirondacks are still mostly snow free and are likely to stay so at least for two more weeks.

Potential Icy Start to Decmeber

A heads up for Tuesday, December 1st. The National Weather service is now calling for a slight chance of freezing rain between 8am and 9am, then rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 40. Southeast wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected.

November 30, 2015 morning

Cloudy and 27 degrees as this Monday gets off to a cold start on the last day of November. This will be the coldest day of the week. Rain for tomorrow through Thursday. Today will Β gradually become sunny, with a high near 40. South wind 3 to 6 mph.

The landlord will be stopping by this morning to fix the thermostat and my fix to the refrigerator seems to be working. When I get a chance I’ll look at getting the “y” connection so I can hook up the lantern. Hopefully I’ll have closure on all those things.

Next weekend looks pretty nice at this point but we will see once the weekend gets closer. It might be fun to get away for the weekend. We shall see.

At any rate, have a great Monday! Tuesday is just around the corner.

November 29, 2015 night

Good evening. Happy Sunday evening. Back to work tomorrow for a nice long full week. Temperatures will be typical for the first week of December and even a bit above. As is common when it gets warm out in December, rain is expected for the mid part of the week.

Currently 33 degrees and partly clear this evening with a Waxing Gibbous Moon. The bright moonlight filtering through the clouds makes driving and walking easy this evening but keep your eyes out for some icy spots and deer onΒ  the road.

Later tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. North wind 5 to 7 mph.Β Sunrise tomorrow at 7:03 AM. Tomorrow will be pretty seasonable and nice. Sunny, with a high near 40. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Sunset at 4:23 PM for a total of 9 hours and 20 minutes of daylight.

I broke camp and returned home pretty early as I wanted to visit Tractor Supply Company to check out the Carhartt sale. I was disappointed that they didn’t have any of the classic Carhartt Duck Parkas in my size. It was the end of the sale. I should have gone on Black Friday. I went on Carhartt’s website and found they were out in my size except for the traditional tan color which I didn’t want because it shows mud and muck stains and a ugly blue color. I was also disappointed to see the new Duck Parkas were no longer union made in America. Now they are made in Bangladesh, probably by slave labor – and cost like $40 more than 7 years ago. Some of Carhartt’s products are still union made but not their parkas anymore. Sucks.

Unpacking this evening from camp, I snagged the thermostat on the wall of my apartment and ripped off the front of the old mercury thermostat in my apartment. It’s now in pieces on my counter. I was carrying the Mr.Β  Heater up the stairs and caught the sling on the thermostat while balancing the shotgun in the other hand. I got to call the landlord in the morning and ask for it to be fixed.

Also managed to rip the handle off the ever so rusty refrigerator in the kitchen. Fixed that myself with superglue and tape. That just cracked because it’s falling apart like most things in my cheap, rundown apartment in the suburbs. Some day I’ll buy land out in the country to live on, but for now I like my rundown apartment with the convenience of the bus and the good money I make at my job to buy toys. I don’t want to be tied down to New York forever with the super restrictive gun laws, the open burning ban, the overzealous animal rights folk, the wilderness and environmental jackasses and general indignities of being an upstater in a state which is for all practical purposes a colony of the metropolitan region. Hah! I think I’d probably miss the absurdity of it all if I moved away – I like sardonic humor.

In my general day of suck, I also bought the wrong connectors for the new propane lantern I bought for using of the same propane bottle as my camp heater. This way when winter camping I will have plenty of light without having to worry about running out of Coleman fuel or having to constantly pump up the lantern in the cold. I will order the proper “y” adapter online along with the connector from the high pressure to low pressure line. Oh, well.

All and all it was a nice weekend camping even if it was cold this morning and rainy and damp Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Things went bad when I got back home but I had good weekend. My problems are minor and will get worked out next week.

Good night! Sleep well.
