Monday Evening Update

Good Evening! Happy Monday. It was a nice weekend up at Moose River Plains. Saturday was a bit of a disappointment, with gray skies and cloudy, cool weather, but I sure had a lot of fun doing target shooting up at Moose Plains with my air rifle. Still want a 22, but this was only $140, and pellets are cheap and available everywhere, unlike 22 ammo.

Saturday, went down to Cedar River Flow, and paddled out there for a while. Tried to do some fishing, but the water was really choppy. Also went fishing out on Wakely Pond for a bit, also didn’t catch anything there, but I was shore fishing, so that made it more challenging. I’ve not had very good luck at fishing in Moose Plains lately, but granted I haven’t spent a lot of time up there.

Got my hunting license on Friday. Thursday evening, wanted to get my license, but Walmart Glenmont was out of license paper. So I went to the Bethlehem Town Hall and the computer was down. Ended up getting my license at Walmart in Latham, after waiting in line for 35 minutes with a bunch of burly hunters who needed their licenses for a bunch of seasons that opened up on Friday (like Ruffled Grouse in the Northern Zone). Also got my trapping license and turkey tags.

Mostly was planning on doing target practice and getting more skilled at shooting this weekend, but I wanted to have a license in case a forest ranger stopped by or a squirrel walked by. It’s awkward to say the least to be shooting and not have a hunting license on state land. I figured if I saw some squelcher along the way, I might drop them, but I knew in a short weekend trip to the Moose Plains, I wouldn’t have a lot of time for squirrel hunting.

Big Red almost left my stranded at Moose Plains on Sunday, when I ignored the low battery warnings, and left the keys in the on position for about an hour after the low battery warning came on and radio shut-off. Didn’t think much about it, but the truck’s computer continued to discharge the battery, even though the radio had powered down. I tried to flag down a passing car, which there were few, but ended up going back to the truck, and by then the battery had recovered enough to get started again.

All and All A Good Weekend.Β The weather might have been shitty, at least cloudy, but it didn’t rain. And I used up almost half of the 500-round tin of pellets in my air rifle. That’s a lot of shooting, figuring it’s single shot spring action. But my left arm started to hurt by the end of the weekend — not from the minimal recoil but from opening the action so much. But I figured the campsites where far apart enough, and the noise was little enough, that I didn’t bother no one.
