Don’t Confuse Your Highland and Highlands

One should never confuse the Town of Highlands in Orange County (containing West Point, Bear Mountain, and Bear Mountain Bridge on the Hudson River) with the Town of Highland in Sullivan County (containing Barryville, Eldred, Highland Lake, Minisink Ford and Yulan on Delaware River), with the Hamlet of Highland in the Town of Lloyd in Ulster County (which also borders the Hudson River, and contains the Mid-Hudson Bridge to Poughkeespie).

The hamlet of Highland is pronounced as two seperate words — “high land”, stressing the syllables. In contrast, the Town of Highland in Sullivan County and Highlands in Orange County rhymes with “island”.

You can also drive from Ulster County to Orange County to Sullivan County, without ever crossing any other counties.

The Last Thursday of August Update

Good Morning! Happy Thursday. Tomorrow starts Labor Day Weekend, if you can believe it. This morning started out as a beautiful early fall day, but it’s obvious the heat is starting to crank up by quarter of eight am this morning. This holiday weekend is going to be a warm one, with summer weather being the norm, with an increasing chance of thunderstorms starting on Sunday.

Off to Moose River Plains Early Saturday. At least that’s the plan if all goes well. I think I will be at work late enough on Friday and I don’t know when I will be getting my truck back on Friday from the shop – repairing the seat issue – that I don’t think it’s reasonable to leave that day. But I want to get things cleaned up and packed on Friday night if possible, and head out early for the long weekend.

Probably camp up there for two days, and maybe do some kayak fishing on Cedar River Flow. I tried last time fishing Helldiver Pond from the shore, and all I caught was some pretty tiny bullheads. I don’t really like bullheads, but they do cook up decently. Probably once fall comes, an d I have my truck finally totally fixed up, I will do more fishing, and hopefully catch things that taste better then bullheads. Maybe do some hiking, especially if I end up going to Inlet on Sunday, as I expect I may have to do to check my email and phone.

Hoping the Seat Gets Fixed This Week. It shouldn’t be a major issue, but the insurance refused to pay the claim without it being demonstrated what the problem actually is with the seat and that it was accident related. I think there is a gear stripped in the seat, and hopefully it’s a part they can get quickly installed in the truck. Otherwise, hopefully I will at least get the estimate and the claim paid, and I can find some time in mid-September to drop the truck off in the morning, to get fixed. Otherwise, I guess just will have to deal with the broken seat, and have to pay to get it fixed myself. I don’t think it will be a million bucks, and a seat that is not comfortable and causes back pain, is worth to get to fixed, even if it sets me back a couple hundred bucks.
