How to Understand Politics

The best way to understand contemporary politics is to read articles from the 1960s and 1970s. Despite what they tell you, absolutely nothing has changed since then, much less the sides on the issues. Technology and personalities have changed a bit, and the public has moved back and forth a bit, but general perspectives on issues of day rarely change.

New York won’t celebrate 350th birthday

"On Aug. 26, 1664, 350 years ago Tuesday, a flotilla of four British frigates led by the Guinea, which was manned by 150 sailors and conveying 300 redcoats, anchored ominously in Gravesend Bay off Brooklyn, between Coney Island and the Narrows."

"The reasons behind New Yorkers' nearly unanimous indifference are, well, historical, chief among them an ambivalence toward the British and a dispassion for the past."

Last Hump Day of September

Good Morning! It’s a Hump Day. A sticky start this hump day, with the humidity so high that you’ll get soaked no matter what you do, unless your in a well air conditioned building. It’s not super-hot yet, and might not reach super-hot with high humidity today, but it will be warm one.

Big Red Is Almost Back in Business. Today I dropped Big Red off at the Body Shop to get the Driver’s Seat fixed, but hopefully that will be fixed by the end of the week. After replacing the hot line back to the truck cap interior light, and pulling down the sticky-tape LED lights from the truck cap, and going completely mad, I found the problem was a partially blown fuse.

I never thought a partially blown fuse could cause a voltage drop. As the sticky-tape is gone from LED lights, and they are a $11 part, I decided to order a new set of LED lights for the truck cap, this time in the warm white color. Cold white looks kind of neat in the summer, but it’s not fun on a cold or rainy night – and I’ve heard cold white can make it harder to sleep after looking at it in the evening.

I probably will reuse the cold white LEDs with the now bad sticky-tape for an interior lighting project, or maybe for lighting under the truck or in the engine cab. While not street legal, in the back-country or when showing off, it would cool to have the engine bay glowing or maybe under the frame. I could just connect up the strings using those wire ties.

Where Did the Summer Go? Saturday is the start of Labor Day Weekend. Sunset on Labor Day is 7:30 PM. I am pretty sure the next the time I will look up it will be November. Election Day falls on November 4th this year, which is relatively early. Sure there will be a fall, but as we all know, fall seems to disappear without ever being noticed. November 5th will roll around, and you’ll look back wondering what happened during those months that seemed to fall off the calender.

It seems like yesterday was just the week before Memorial Day Weekend. Then suddenly like a needle on a turntable jumps, it was Labor Day Weekend. Then I will look up and will be Veterans Day. Time seems to jump like that. But I tell myself November is quite pleasant, with hunting seasons being fully in swing, Thanksgiving, and hopefully a bunch of time off.
