Same Sex Marriage Used to Be Illegal? Really?!
Itβs pretty clear that DOMA and Prop 8 Supreme Court cases show which way the wind is blowing, when it comes to the issue of same-sex marriage. It would not be shocking if same-sex marriage becomes a constitutional right, similar to interracial marriage, within the next couple of years. There will be some grumbling by conservatives in the following couple of months, but then it will become a non-issue.
Here is why:
- Same-sex marriage is not a tax. It doesnβt cost anybody anything, unless they choose to go out and get a marriage license to marry their partner.
- There are no penalties if you choose not to get a same-sex marriage. Itβs entirely voluntary. If you choose not to marry a partner of the same sex, you wonβt go jail or face a fine.
- Same-sex marriage is not a mandate. Businesses and local government will not have to do anything to adopt to the change, and indeed all of the same tax forms and paperwork as it continues.
- Nobody loses any rights under same-sex marriage. Donβt like it, then donβt marry somebody of the same sex.
People who oppose same-sex marriage are really going to look backwards, when we look back, years from now.
